Kenneth Patchen

Nothing Has Changed
Fiftieth Anniversary Edition

Kenneth Patchen's powerful poem, Nothing Has Changed, was written in 1958 and first published in 1975 as the initial production of The Artichoke Press. For that broadside edition, thirty copies were printed on eighteenth-century handmade papers originally used for the preservation of botanical specimens at the Dudley Herbarium, Stanford University.

These rare papers, a gift from the herbarium's director in the 1960s, were used by Patchen in crafting his celebrated “painting-poems”, and many of the remaining sheets bear his preparatory tinting and coloration—no two pages are alike. The rough foolscap paper, made from diverse materials, evokes an aura of timeless antiquity.

To commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of The Artichoke Press, Nothing Has Changed has been reset in a style similar to the original version. Thirty copies have been printed on the same eighteenth-century Patchen papers by Jonathan Clark. After half a century, the poem remains as urgently relevant as ever.

The letterpress-printed broadside is loosely contained in a cover of linen-backed boards measuring 18.75 by 11.75 inches, bearing designs from Patchen drawings. The price, subject to availability, is $250.
